Summer Latin Institute

The Summer Latin Institute (SLI) is open exclusively to those enrolled in the UF Graduate Distance Learning Program in Classics and is required for all incoming distance students. Held over ten intensive days each July on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. Hosted in the historic Dauer Hall, the SLI provides students with immersive training in Latin language and pedagogy while fostering connections with faculty and fellow students. Students may also elect to complete an additional three-credit research paper in conjunction with the program.

All attending students will have an individual advising session with Dr. Evan Brubaker.  A sign-up sheet will be circulated on the first day of the SLI.

Dr. Brubaker will provide instructions to all distance learning students on registration at the end of the Spring Semester.

Distance students pay approximately $20 more per credit than the in-state tuition rate, so the current distance tuition rate is about $544 per credit hour. If a student registers after the regular registration deadline he/she will be assessed a late registration fee of $100.00. Likewise, if a student does not pay his/her tuition by the fee payment deadline there is a $100.00 late payment fee assessed.

On campus housing (Lakeside Complex) is available on a first come, first serve basis. Those who are interested in this option should contact Dr. Brubaker (e.brubaker@ufl.edu). Those interested in other options can consider nearby hotels (UF Reitz Union Hotel, Holiday Inn University Center, etc.) and rentals (AirBnB, Vrbo). Plan your hotel or AirBnB near the SLI classroom, Dauer Hall, or near a bus stop. The UF campus is big, see map for reference.

The local bus is free with a GatorOne Card. If you do not yet have a GatorOne card, you can get a mobile ID here. University bus schedules and routes can be found here: http://go-rts.com/. The bus does go to the Gainesville airport. The airport’s website (http://www.gra-gnv.com/) also has information on taxis and shuttles.

Parking around the University of Florida campus is very difficult. Students interested in receiving an on-campus parking pass should contact Transportation and Parking Services: https://taps.ufl.edu.

Please see this document for local guide to your everyday necessities, food, and things to do, here.

As a tradition, we host a dinner one evening at the legendary Satchel’s Pizza. Family members are welcome. (Please bring cash for drinks, that makes things easier.)
