MA and ML Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

Prerequisites

  • An undergraduate degree in Classics or a Classics-related field.
  • A minimum of ~three years of college-level Latin. The third year can be waived with a strong performance on the sight Latin translation exam that is part of the application process. 
  • Current employment in education. A letter from the applicant’s supervisor verifying employment as a teacher or in education must be submitted to the Classics Department as part of the application materials.

Admission Requirements

  • All Master’s applicants are required to take an online exam, consisting of Latin sight translation.
  • The application deadline will be February 15th, 2027. To receive full consideration, your application and all supporting materials must be received by the application deadline.
  • Deferred enrollment is not allowed.  Admitted students are required to attend the Summer Latin Institute at the University of Florida, held for ten days in July.
  • Please note that all successful Master’s applicants are accepted into the M.L. (non-thesis) program. Students interested in the PhD should apply directly to the M.A. (thesis) program. Students may apply to transfer to the M.A. (thesis) program after completion of their second Fall semester. Contact Dr. Brubaker (e.brubaker@ufl.edu) for details.
